He Ritenga – Treaty of Waitangi Principles: Health Audit Framework

He Ritenga is a framework for assessing how culturally safe and appropriate our services are for Maori.

It is designed to:

  1. monitor progress by District Health Boards and health providers against:
  2. audit and evaluate both clinical and non-clinical services.

It assists District Health Boards and providers to implement the Treaty of Waitangi through five aspects of business:

  • Service delivery
  • Governance
  • Workforce development
  • Planning
  • Intersectoral initiatives.

Audit is only a component of the He Ritenga initiative and the information will serve as a basis for ongoing monitoring and improvement.

Recommendations following the audit include ways to:

  • increase health and independence for Maori
  • build relationships with key Maori stakeholders
  • demonstrate a robust and comprehensive commitment to the health of Maori.

The current audit of services started in February 2008 and is scheduled to finish by 2010.
